About

Hosted by the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH), the Humans In Charge 2024 international symposium brought together global experts to discuss the most pressing issues in artificial intelligence ethics, regulation, policy, and governance. Now in its second year, the event provided a platform for thought leaders from Europe, the US, the UAE, New Zealand, and beyond to share insights and practical solutions for navigating the complexities of AI in a rapidly evolving world.

Building on the success of the inaugural symposium in 2023, this year's event expanded to a two-day format, allowing for deeper engagement with the topics at hand. With AI governance becoming increasingly crucial amid the growing adoption of AI technologies and the implementation of the EU AI Act, the symposium provided a timely opportunity for stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions and exchange actionable insights.

Our distinguished speakers engaged in a dynamic range of plenary sessions, keynote speeches, panel discussions, and workshops, offering participants practical knowledge and forward-thinking perspectives on the operationalization of AI governance. The symposium also fostered the creation of a global community of practice, bringing together representatives from governments, corporations, academia, and international organizations.

Humans In Charge 2024 has cemented its position as a key event in the ongoing dialogue on responsible AI, with an emphasis on practical guidance and collaborative action to ensure that AI remains a tool that is shaped by human oversight and accountability..

Opening Speech: András Koltay, President of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority, delivers the opening address.
András Koltay: Opening Speech

President Koltay reaffirms the significance of AI's evolving role in society, highlighting its potential economic and environmental benefits, while emphasizing the importance of ethical usage, reliable regulation, and transparent operation. As we move beyond initial hype and disillusionment, it is crucial to establish clear rules that balance innovation with protecting  human dignity, freedom, and security.

Keynote Speech: Kay Firth-Butterfield (Good Tech Advisory) presents the opening keynote.
Kay Firth-Butterfield: Opening Keynote

This presentation raises fundamental questions about the future of AI and its long-term social, environmental, and human implications. It urges the audience to look beyond current regulations and technological progress, advocating for a comprehensive dialogue on how we wish to shape the relationship between humans and AI over coming decades. The speaker examines practical dilemmas in everyday applications—such as healthcare, education, caregiving, and labor markets—and stresses the importance of considering diverse societal needs, safeguarding marginalized communities, and addressing the environmental cost of AI development.

Keynote Presentation: Adrián Gonzalez Sanchez (Microsoft Spain) delivers a thematic opening presentation.
Adrián Gonzalez Sanchez: Responsible AI in Digital Platforms, Telco & Media - Keynote Speech

One year after initial excitement around generative AI, the focus has shifted from ethics to accountability, compliance, and complex regulatory landscapes. Global AI rules (EU AI Act, pending North American laws), industry standards (ISO 42001), data governance frameworks (DAMA), and supplier accountability must all fit together. Companies must build “accountable AI” by piecing together regulations, technical formats for requirements, structured checklists, and existing governance tools. This puzzle-like approach transforms confusion into clear, systematic AI governance and compliance.

Olivia Erdélyi internationally recognized AI ethics and policy expert is speaking on the stage at the Humans in Charge AI conference in Budapest on 2 October 2023
Olívia Erdélyi: AI Regulation, Ethics and Governance – Keynote Speech

The presentation provides a concise overview of the complex ecosystem of AI regulation and standardization, highlighting the practical challenges of implementing frameworks like the EU AI Act. It emphasizes that high-level legal instruments often lack the detailed guidance needed for practical application. In this context, standards—developed by bodies such as ISO/IEC and European organizations (CEN, CENELEC)—are essential for operationalizing requirements related to risk management and quality assurance. Yet, navigating multiple overlapping standards, certification schemes, and organizational and product-level considerations remains intricate.

Keynote Presentation: Maria Axente (University of Cambridge) delivers a thematic opening presentation.
Maria Axente: AI & the Next Generation. Preparing and Protecting Youth - Keynote Speech

Children are increasingly active participants in the era of artificial intelligence. While rapid technological developments pose challenges, the focus is on fostering critical thinking, self-awareness, and supportive environments so that young people can leverage AI as a beneficial tool. With the right guidance and values, children can grow into creative, confident, and compassionate innovators who shape a future in which technology elevates human potential.

Keynote Presentation: Gianluca Misuraca (Inspiring Futures) delivers a thematic opening presentation.
Giunlaca Misuraca: AI in Society & Public Services – Keynote Speech

This presentation examines the evolving landscape of AI governance within the context of public policy, global regulatory frameworks, and capacity-building efforts. It stresses the complexity of balancing innovation with responsible oversight and highlights the need for “human-centric” approaches—at the European, UN, and transatlantic levels—to ensure AI technologies serve societal interests. Emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration, upskilling public officials, and integrating ethical, legal, and technical perspectives, the speaker argues that sustaining trust and safeguarding human values require new educational models and global cooperation.
